Why I Built a Free Job Application Tracker

A few months into my last job search, I had a spreadsheet with 40 rows. Then it was 60. Then I stopped updating it entirely, because keeping it current started to feel like a second job.

By the time I got a callback for a position at a company I didn’t fully recognize the name of, I knew something had to change. I’d applied to so many roles on LinkedIn, Indeed, company career pages, through a recruiter, and through a friend’s referral that I genuinely couldn’t remember what I’d applied for, when, or what happened next. Had I already interviewed with them? Was this a follow-up, or a first contact? I had no idea. I fumbled through the call, sounding like someone who didn’t care enough to keep track of his own applications, when the truth was the opposite: I cared so much I’d applied to more jobs than any spreadsheet could keep up with.

That call didn’t go anywhere. And it didn’t need to; it was a wake-up call instead.

The Problem with Job Searching isn’t Just Finding Jobs

Job boards make it easy to apply to dozens of positions in a single afternoon. What none of them do is help you remember what you did five minutes after you did it. Every job seeker I talked to afterward had some version of my spreadsheet or worse, nothing at all, just a mental list that got fuzzier by the week.

So I built the tool I wished I’d had: a simple job application tracker that lives right on this site, free to use, no sign-up hoops, no spreadsheet formulas to maintain.

What the Job Application Tracker Does

For each job you apply to, you can log:

  • Company name: so you always know who you’re talking to before a call
  • Application URL: a direct link back to the original posting
  • Status: Saved, Applied, Interviewing, Offer, or Rejected, so you know exactly where things stand at a glance
  • Date applied: so you can follow up at the right time, not too early or too late
  • Follow-up date: a built-in reminder of when to check back in
  • Notes: recruiter names, interview details, salary conversations, anything you’d otherwise forget by the next call

It’s built directly into hirelocaljobs.com, so there’s nothing to download and nothing to configure. Log in, add a job in a few seconds, and move on with your search.

Who The Application Tracker is for

If you’re applying to one or two jobs a month, you probably don’t need this; a sticky note will do. But if you’re in a real job search, applying broadly, following up with recruiters, and juggling multiple interview pipelines at once, this is built for exactly that moment: the one where your search has outgrown your memory.

Try it for Free

You don’t need to pay for a premium job-search app to stay organized. Log in or register for free and start tracking your applications today so the next time your phone rings, you’ll know exactly who’s calling and why.
